Congratulations on your new tattoo! To ensure proper healing, follow these guidelines carefully.
❌ What NOT to do (for both healing methods):
- Do not scratch, pick, or peel off scabs.
- Avoid exercise for at least 7-10 days – sweat and friction can slow healing.
- Do not soak in baths, pools, or the ocean (for at least 2 weeks).
- Showering is allowed, but avoid steaming the tattoo.
- If using Second Skin film, try not to get it wet, even though it is waterproof.
- If healing without film, you can wash the tattoo directly in the shower, but do not steam it.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds (for at least a month or until fully healed).
- Avoid tight and synthetic clothing that may rub against the tattoo.
- If using Second Skin film:
- Do not pop any fluid bubbles under the film – just wait for removal.
- Some people may develop an allergic reaction to the medical adhesive, usually appearing as redness around the film’s edges (most common in the armpit area). If you notice redness, remove the film immediately and switch to the non-film aftercare method.
Option 1: Healing with Second Skin Film
- Your tattoo artist has applied a protective film for 4 days – do not remove it earlier.
- If the film starts to peel off but the tattoo is still covered, you can secure it with medical tape.
- If the film peels off completely before 4 days, remove it and follow the non-film aftercare instructions.
- After 4 days, carefully remove the film under warm (not hot!) running water to avoid damaging the skin.
- Wash the tattoo under running water at a comfortable temperature with mild antibacterial soap (fragrance-free and alcohol-free). Be thorough but gentle!
- Dry the tattoo with a clean paper towel by gently patting (do not rub!).
- Apply a thin layer of healing ointment – I recommend using baby Bepanthen. This ointment stays on the skin longer, prevents drying, and helps healing.
- Apply 2-3 times a day for the next 4 days.
Option 2: Healing with Ointment (without film)
- Your artist applied a protective bandage – remove and replace it within 3-4 hours after your session.
- If the tattoo is not bleeding, you can leave it uncovered at home.
- Wash the tattoo under running water at a comfortable temperature using antibacterial soap.
- Dry the tattoo with a clean paper towel, gently patting it dry (do not rub!).
- Apply a thin layer of healing ointment – I recommend baby Bepanthen. It helps protect the skin, prevents drying, and promotes healing.
- Repeat this process 3-4 times a day for the first week.
Additional Protection Measures:
- For the first 3-4 days, cover the tattoo with an absorbent baby pad (available at pharmacies) when going outside. This will protect it from dirt and friction.
- At night, for the first 3-4 days, it is recommended to use a baby pad as a compress to prevent contact with bedding and contamination.
- Securing the baby pad:
- You can secure it with medical tape, but be cautious – some adhesives may cause irritation or burns.
- A bandage wrap is a better option, but do not wrap too tightly over the tattooed area.
General Healing Time:
The outer layer of the skin typically heals in 7-14 days. Full skin recovery takes about a month.
If you notice severe redness, swelling, pus, or fever, contact a doctor immediately.
Follow these recommendations, and your tattoo will stay vibrant and beautiful for years to come!
